*CHRISTMAS EVENTS IN AREQUIPA*
The Christmas Party at Flora Tristan, held on the 20th of December, was a collaboration between Traveller Not Tourist and the local Lions Club. The Lions Club brought panetones (a cake traditionally eaten at Christmas in Peru), drinks and presents for the children. We have around 60 students who regularly attend classes at Flora Tristan but over 150 turned up for the festivities. As this usually happens, the teachers at the school had given tickets to the regular students beforehand to ensure that they all got presents!
We have also collected presents by leaving boxes in local hostals for travellers to leave gifts in. These will be given to the children at the school on the 23rd along with clothes for the adults.
*PACHAWAWAS CHRISTMAS FAYRE AND FUN DAY*
We have just started a charity called Pachawawas (Children of the Earth) to support the projects Traveller Not Tourist works with in Peru (a school and an orphanage).
The Christmas Fayre and Fun Day on Sat 11th December in Bristol was a great success - we had lots of fun and met loads of lovely people and managed to raise £500 whilst doing so! We will be posting a write up and photos of the event soon so keep checking back! Here's a few pics to wet your appetite (thanks Leon!)...

***OUR UK FUNDRAISING WEEKEND***
These were our first fundraising efforts.
THE SALE
The weekend started with a jumble and craft sale on the Saturday (4th Sept). Lots of lovely people donated loads of great "pre-loved" stuff and we also had some items made by local artists, a cafe selling home-made cakes and a lemonade stall.

Something Luis and I have found throughout our time working at Traveller Not Tourist is that doing good things attracts good things and this event was no exception - Jonathan at The Elmgrove Centre where we held the sale let us use the venue for free, a crafty lady named Wendy turned up with some beautiful scented candles she had made which she gave us to sell, a friend called Azusa manned a stall where she taught people how to make various origami shapes in exchange for donations and a huge amount of people donated their clothes, books, toys and bric-brac. Not to mention all the guys who did the setting up, selling, serving, packing up and taking care of the children inbetween as well. Special thanks go out to my partner in crime, and the lady who had the idea to set up Pachawawas in the first place, Rosie. We'd also like to thank Suzy, Chaz, Azusa and John, Penny, Lewis, Beth, Judith and Nina. We never could have done it without you!
All the hard work paid off as we raised over £200!
We're already planning our next sale, it'll be a Festive Christmas Fayre with loads of great presents and stocking fillers as well as all the pre-loved goodies so come along and bag a bargain - details to come soon (email pachawawas@gmail.com with "jumble" in the subject line to get updates on future events)
If you would like to donate items for us to sell, please call 07901 676 445 and speak to Rosie.
THE MARATHON
The next day (Sunday 5th Sept) we were up early again, this time to support Lisa and Huw who volunteered in Peru in July 2009. They moved to Bristol a while ago and got in touch with us to say that they would like to continue to be involved with Traveller Not Tourist from the UK. Lisa decided to do the Bristol Half Marathon (all 13 miles of it!) to raise money for the school and orphanage and Huw joined her at the last minute.

The weather wasn't great but Lisa assured me she preferred running in the rain (I don't think Huw was in agreement though!) They completed the race in just over 2 hours, which was less than they had estimated it would take, and Lisa immediately started talking about when they could do the next one (that wouldn't have been my first thought after running 13 miles but good on her I say!)
So a big WELL DONE to Lisa and Huw and THANK YOU
Lisa raised over £150 in sponsorship!
THE PRESENTATION
So there we were, relaxing on Sunday night, thinking we had some time to chill out when we got a text asking us to give a presentation about Traveller Not Tourist at a Women's Institute meeting the next day (Monday 6th Sept). Lisa kindly agreed to come with me so I put some photos together and wrote some notes. The WI group seemed quite interested and it was great to have Lisa there to give a volunteer's perspective (and for moral support when I got nervous!)

After the presentation several people approached us to ask more about volunteering in Peru and we got paid a speaker's fee and collected donations so all in all we raised over £70! Thanks go to Suzy for arranging this and for giving us lifts :-)
That took our total up to over £420 in just 3 days!
If we can do that in three days, imagine what we can do in the future!
If you would like to be part of the UK fundraising effort, perhaps you would like to come to our meeting on October 16th in Bristol, email pachawawas@gmail.com for more information!
PACHAWAWAS LOGO COMPETITION
We ran a competition to design a logo for our new UK charity - Pachawawas (children of the earth). You can see the winning entry on the home page but we thought that all the entries were so great that we would let you take a look at the others too.

Thanks again to all who entered, we were really impressed by the high standard of the submissions and really liked all of them!
HORSERIDING TRIP
One of the most gratifying experiences you can have with the children is taking them on a trip, especially to do something completely new. Anibal, owner of Horse Tours Pa'Enrique, offered us the amazing opportunity to introduce some of the children to the joys of horseriding. With the help of ALT Transportes Turisticos who donated the use of 2 of their buses and the drivers' time, we managed to get to the riding ground, which the Local Authorities kindly granted us permission to use. The children had a wonderful time, on the journey there as well as in the horses, and we are very grateful to all those who made the trip possible. Thank you!

GRADUATION FOR THE CHILDREN OF THE ORPHANAGE
December marks the end of the school year in Peru so that means graduation (and then holidays until March - heeeeeelp!!!)
